Fredericton rallies for Gaza

E-mail Print PDF

Frederictonians gathered in front of City Hall to protest attacks on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla.Around 30 people braved Saturday's downpour to protest Israel's attacks on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla that killed 9 peace activists and injured dozens more. The group gathered in front of City Hall to stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza and to listen to speakers from Jews for Just Peace, Fredericton Palestine Solidarity, the NB Public Interest Research Group (NBPIRG), the Fredericton Islamic Association and the Fredericton Peace Coalition.

Many speakers highlighted the need to answer the call of Palestinian civil society for a campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israeli apartheid.

Sarah Kardash spoke of the recent resistance from faculty and students at Mount Allison University in response to the university's decision to award Indigo Books and Music Inc.'s CEO, Heather Reisman, with an honourary degree. Reisman and her husband Gerry Schwartz are founders of the HESEG Foundation, an organization that provides scholarships to former 'lone soldiers' -- soldiers who serve in the Israeli military but who are not from Israel.

HESEG

In 2006, HESEG donated 100 mobile air conditioning units to provide relief for residents of northern Israel forced to live in bomb shelters during the Israel-Hezbollah War, an even greater crime than to assist ex-solders who want to go back to school?
Isreal is not apartide, isreali arabs eat in the same cafes, live in the same streets, go to the same schools, swim in the same pools, go to the same jobs on the same busses. thats apartide?
